Information/Instructional Design

Information and instructional design is the art of creating the layout that in return delivers easy of use and effectiveness to the end user. One way to create this is by understand where the end user stands with ability and psychologically, then forming end goals then by the transition into the new design.

It is based a lot around cognitive and behavioral psychology, and not simply graphic design.

Great Web Design Examples

Although it is hard to list examples of websites that I find to be a great example because you don't know until you come across the-below are a list of some excellent web design examples that I have come across:

- www.theotherdimension.com ... a design/marketing company's website. A nice, clear layout/structure that is easy to understand and navigate through that looks quality and stands out from other websites.

- www.google.com ... a renown search engine that is a household name. The site design is quite simple, yet it is easy to navigate and the semantics of the site are also what contributes to it being a great site (E.G. how ever many pages there are, the letter "o" symbolises this and the Google logo changes with season or global events.

- www.newark1.com/ ... a web design company complete with an online portfolio. This website has a very clear format, warm and inviting colours and is easy to navigate. The use of pictures maintains interest and adds a great element to the page.

Interactive Design

Interactive design is the relationship between products and systems that any user interacts with. It defines how the behavior will occur between the system and the response to its user(s).

The steps of developing good interaction design are very similar to designing a product.

1. Research
2. Research analysis and concept generation
3. Alternative design and evaluation.
4. Prototyping and usability testing
5. Implementation
6. System testing

Throughout the whole design process, the designer must take into consideration the emotional influences and responses that the end user will produce. There are many factors that contribute to a successful design by emotionally engaging the user in positive thoughts and responses which include fonts, sizes, layout and colour.

Socially, interative design can be seen in devices that we so frequently have contact with, including mobile phones and computers (and the interfaces) as well as constantly improving how we interact with other technological devices.

Web 2.0

Web 2.0 is an internet technology that brings a whole new dimension to the world wide web. It gives the options for users to create such features as wiki's, networking sites and even blogs, like we're using now. It can be used to publish information by a user and interact with others of the same nature, whereby the controller of the page and its information is...you!

An example of this is Facebook, Myspace and Wikipedia. Commonly used web applications.
